Conscious and unconscious beliefs and perspectives that teachers, district administrators, and school leaders hold about impoverished students and families from racially and culturally diverse backgrounds affect how they teach, discipline, and work with these students. In this institute, we’ll examine how teaching practices and strategies reflect our beliefs about race, culture, gender, and poverty. We will focus on the assets these students bring to schools and classrooms and encourage teachers to ask themselves what they can do to help improve the academic and discipline issues that impair student learning. Participants will explore messaging about students and families who live in poverty; examine how their beliefs and perspectives affect instruction, student learning, and discipline; and develop strategies and solutions to improve instruction, student success, and discipline outcomes.
