Imagine a school with a diverse student body where every student feels safe and valued, and all students—regardless of race, culture, home language, sexual orientation, gender identity, academic history, and individual challenges—can succeed with challenging classes, projects, and activities. In this school, teachers notice and meet students’ individual instructional needs and foster a harmonious and supportive environment, and students feel empowered to learn, grow, and pursue their dreams. This is the school all our students need and deserve.
Dominique Smith and Nancy Frey, colleagues at San Diego’s innovative Health Sciences High and Middle College, introduce a new model for achieving equity through social and emotional learning (SEL) to clarify the structural and interpersonal components of an excellent schooling experience.
· Understand the importance of using an integrated approach to social and emotional learning to drive equity work to improve academic outcomes.
· Explore each level of the Equity SEL framework: Identity and Agency, Emotional Regulation, Cognitive Regulation, Social Skills and Relationships, and Public Spirit.
· Apply their school context to gauge and reflect on how the SEL portion of the School Equity Taxonomy affects their work at both the individual student level and across the school building.
· Gain skills and knowledge about data-driven approaches to integrating SEL into academics.
Participants will each receive a copy of Building Equity: Policies and Practices to Empower All Learners (ASCD, 2017). An additional materials fee of $23 will be applied to your registration.
