A 2019 survey of leaders regarding differentiation in their schools revealed several clear and important trends:
Approximately 75 percent of respondents noted that their school had students whose reading and math skills are two or more years below grade level, as well as students whose skills in those areas are two or more years above grade level.
Eighty-five percent of respondents replied that academically diverse classrooms offer a wide array of benefits for students.
For 87 percent of respondents, differentiation is a high or very high priority for their school.
While 93 percent of those submitting the survey felt that well-executed differentiation would be very beneficial to students, only 34 percent felt that their school or district was effective or very effective at delivering well-executed differentiation.
The purpose of this institute is to help leaders extend both their confidence and competence in helping teachers learn to continue developing their skills with effective differentiation. We’ll focus on two areas: (1) a framework for what quality differentiation would look like, and (2) key guidelines for leadership practices that help teachers change their practice to support success for today’s academically diverse students.
Learn key vocabulary related to differentiation that helps support leaders in developing teacher knowledge of differentiation.
Understand key principles of differentiation that should guide teacher planning and practice in academically diverse classrooms.
Analyze written and video examples of differentiation to develop images of high-quality differentiation at work.
Develop next steps for leading toward increasingly effective differentiation in participants’ classrooms, schools, or districts.
Participants will each receive a copy of Leading for Differentiation: Growing Teachers Who Grow Kids (ASCD, 2015), Understanding Differentiated Instructions (ASCD Quick Reference Guide, 2017), and a Differentiation poster (ASCD poster, 2015). Additional materials fee of $45.00 will be applied to your registration.
